What the CMR consignment note is
The CMR consignment note is the document that travels with the goods in international road transport between the countries that apply the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road. It records who sends, who receives, what is carried, where it is loaded and where it is delivered.
Its purpose is evidential: it proves that a carriage contract exists and records the condition in which the carrier took over the goods. That is why the form sets aside one box —number 8 in the IRU model— for the reservations and remarks the carrier notes down when taking charge of the load.
The document is issued in four copies: one for the sender, one for the consignee that travels with the goods, one for the carrier and a fourth for administrative purposes.
